Now on to A to Z!

F is for — Princess Fiona from Dreamworks’ Shrek films A2Z-BADGE-0002015-LifeisGood-230_zps660c38a0

Princess Fiona starts out as the typical fairy tale heroine — the beautiful damsel in distress, trapped in a tower, awaiting a handsome prince to come to her rescue. In a creative twist to the story, Fiona’s “handsome prince” turns out to be an unhandsome, un-princely ogre named Shrek.

Fiona soon proves that she’s not what she seems, either. When surrounded by enemies, she shows off some pretty cool ninja moves, both as a human princess and as an ogress. In Shrek the Third, she organizes the other princesses and fights against Prince Charming and his minions, and in Shrek Forever After, she rescues herself from the tower and leads a band of rebel ogres against the evil Rumplestiltskin. No helpless damsel is she.

I also like how Fiona embraces her ogre side. She realizes that, for her, this is “love’s true form.” So what if she’s not the most beautiful in the land, or if she has to shave her face like Shrek, or if she makes rude noises like he does? She’s beautiful on the inside where it counts, and she’s found someone who loves her the way she is. And, most importantly, she’s happy just being herself. You don’t have to be the “fairest one of all” to have a happy ending.

Celebrate the Small Things! and New Book Release: The Quest for the Holy Something or Other

Celebrate the Small Things is a weekly celebration created by VikLit and now hosted by Lexa Cain to celebrate the happenings of the week, however small or large. You can learn all about it and sign up for it here. CelebrateSmallThings_Badge

I’ve learned a lot about patience this week. I keep running into delays and haven’t been able to set a firm release date for my novel. I guess the best way to look at it is that, since this book has been many years in the making, another couple of weeks or three won’t really matter in the grand scheme of things.

So, on to celebrations:

  1. We only got 5 inches of snow in that “monster” snowstorm that went up the east coast this past week. Of course, we got another 4 to 5 inches today, but that’s okay. I can take it better in small doses.
  2. Super Bowl Sunday this weekend! Per tradition, I get to spend time with my Dad watching the game.
  3. I wrote my first book review. Entering new territory here. And that review was for:

Kylie Betzner’s debut novel:

The Quest for the Holy Something or Other

Happy Release Day, Kylie!

The_Quest_small_coverEnter the Realm of Camelot, home of famous legends: King Arthur, Sir Lancelot, and Merlin–but this isn’t their story. Meet Pig, a humble gong farmer who dreams of the glories of Camelot. Her dreams become reality–or so she thinks–when she becomes Sir Kay’s page. What starts off as a joke soon becomes the adventure of Pig’s life when Merlin sends the knights on a quest for the Holy Gift Box–er–Bread Basket–whatever it is! On their quest, they face many knight-worthy, and some not-so-knight-worthy, foes: an insane pond dweller, several greedy salespeople, and an overzealous cache seeker, all the while fighting against time, mostly each other, and the most infamous villain of all—change. The Quest for the Holy Something or Other is a fresh and funny take on a well-known legend, with engaging characters, some rather good jokes, and something that starts with S, but it isn’t important.

Meet Kylie —

Kylie BetznerFor starters, I’m an incurable nerd. I love all things fantasy and even do a little cosplay on the side. I’m a natural-born comedian, self-identified coffee junkie, and now leader of The League of Comedy Fantasists! Did I forget to mention I’m an author? My first novel, The Quest for the Holy Something or Other is available now in both paperback and e-book formats! But seriously, the titles I am most proud of are sister, auntie, and friend.
Growing up in a small town surrounded by cornfields, I had nothing better to do than fantasize about unicorns and elves. As an adult, I still refuse to grow up, and spend most of my time creating stories of comedic fantasy. When I’m not writing, which is hardly ever, I enjoy reading, drinking coffee, and spending time with my family and friends. I also run, although I don’t enjoy it so much.
I currently reside in Indiana with my sister, nephew, horde of cats, and one very silly dog.

IWSG — Less Than A Month Away — Aaaaaaaah!

Today’s the day for the Insecure Writer’s Support Group (IWSG) where, on the first Wednesday of every month, writers get together to share their insecurities and offer encouragement. The IWSG was created by Alex J. Cavanaugh, and you can learn all about it and sign up for it here. IWSG_Badge

We were asked to introduce ourselves today, so here goes. I’m a writer of fantasy adventure who lives in Vermont with my kids, two of the best teenagers ever. I’m working my way up the self-publishing mountain, and I’ve almost reached the summit, which makes me giddy — or maybe it’s just the thin air up here…

I’m planning an early February release date (my target date is the 3rd) for my fantasy adventure novel, Lady, Thy Name Is Trouble, providing I can accomplish the rest of what needs to be done by that time. All the usual first-time-author insecurities are plaguing me more than ever. Sometimes I feel like I’m sitting on an over-stuffed suitcase, trying to close it, while the monsters of insecurity are trying to force their way out. I know all aspiring authors go through this, and I just need to persevere. I’ve been waiting so long for this dream to become a reality. I’m not going to let my insecurities stop me from reaching my goal of becoming a published author.

On that note, if anyone would like to help by reading e-ARCs for reviews, posting about my book on the release date, hosting me on your site with an author interview or whatever format you like, and/or sharing the news of the book’s release in other ways — Facebook, Twitter, or whooping and shouting to the rooftops (sorry, that’s what I’ll be doing 🙂 ), I’d be super grateful! Just let me know either in the comments or through the contact form, and I’ll send you whatever materials you need.

Thanks so much to everyone who has supported me on this journey! I know 2015 is going to be awesome!
