I went to Barnes & Noble today, the first chance I’ve had to go back since my book signing on July 24th. I wanted to see if they’d put my book out on their shelves. When I had first approached them about stocking my book, they had said they made decisions about stocking books based on how book signings went. They ordered 30 books for my signing event, knowing they could return the leftovers to the distributor.

I don’t know what they consider a successful signing (I sold 8 books), so I’ve been watching the sales/returns at Ingram to see if they’d send the books back. As of this morning, they hadn’t.

So, what did I see on their shelves?

A dream achieved. Whoo, hoo! (Happy dancing!)

The Love / Hate Challenge!

Back in June, Celine Jeanjean tagged me for the Love / Hate Challenge. Thanks, Celine! The idea is to list ten things you love and ten you hate, and then tag ten people to continue the Challenge. You can read about it on Celine’s blog, Down the Rabbit Hole.

Ten things I love (in no particular order):

  1. My memories
  2. My kids’ smiles and laughter
  3. Writing
  4. Taking long walks in the woods
  5. The way the woods smell after it rains
  6. Swords and old keys
  7. A good book
  8. Curling up with my kids to watch a movie
  9. Solitude
  10. IHOP pancakes!

Ten things I hate (ditto):

  1. Spiders!
  2. Sexism, and any other prejudice
  3. Not getting a real person on the phone
  4. Computer crashes
  5. Rap music
  6. Getting sick
  7. Running late
  8. Traffic jams (particularly when I’m running late)
  9. People who are unkind
  10. The taste of mustard

And that’s it! I’m going to choose not to tag anyone specifically for this, because I tagged quite a few people for the last one I did, but if anyone would like to continue the challenge, feel free to jump in!

We had an official heat wave this week. It’s been so hot and humid I just wanted to curl up in the refrigerator or find some place air-conditioned. Celebrations for this week:

  1. Having fun go-karting and indoor rock climbing with my brother and his family, up from PA.
  2. My Dad and I successfully installed new parts and fixed my clothes dryer!
  3. We’ve almost got all our back to school stuff ready to go. School starts Wednesday! (I’m the only one in my family celebrating this.) 🙂
  4. My son finally got his braces. (I’m the only one celebrating this, too.)

Wow, this week went by in a whirlwind. Up for celebrations this time around:

  1. My first TV interview promoting my book! You can read about it HERE.
  2. My Dad and I took my dryer apart, and I think we can fix it with a couple of new parts. I would sooo rather not have to replace it.
  3. I joined the local Artist’s Guild, an active group of amazingly talented and very friendly people! I’m looking forward to working with them to promote the arts.
  4. We went to a local production of the Broadway hit “Cats” and really enjoyed it. The entire cast did a super job!

IWSG — Books Over Breakfast!

Today’s the day for the Insecure Writer’s Support Group (IWSG) where, on the first Wednesday of every month, writers get together to share their insecurities and offer encouragement. The IWSG was created by Alex J. Cavanaugh, and you can learn all about it and sign up for it here. IWSG_Badge

My insecurities were in full force this morning as I was driving to the local WCAX TV station to do the Books Over Breakfast interview. I didn’t know what questions the news host would ask, so I’d spent some time the night before coming up with answers to possible questions and kept running them through my head. Needless to say, I didn’t get much sleep.

I’d been told to arrive at the station by 6:30 for make-up and to talk a little bit about the interview, which was scheduled for 6:55. I arrived at 6:25 and went in to find the station deserted. It looked like no one was there. Then Gary Sadowsky, the weatherman, came out from the studio where they were filming the early morning newscast. I told him why I was there, and he said to just wait where we were (my kids were with me), and someone would come get me. We sat in the waiting area, and he went back into the studio.

I got more nervous as the minutes ticked by and no one came out. I wondered if they had forgotten about the interview. (It had originally been scheduled for next Wednesday, then changed to today.) We could see on the TV screen the newscast being filmed live. Around 6:40, a cameraman came out and brought me into the studio. He gave me a microphone to attach to my shirt and said the newscaster who would be doing the interview would be over to talk during a break in the broadcast. I asked about the make-up session. He said he didn’t know anything about that and didn’t think there was anyone there in that department.

At 6:45 or so, Eva and Ali, the newscasters introduced themselves, and Eva took about 30 seconds to run her intro and a couple of questions she’d planned to ask by me. Then they had to hurry back in front of the camera for their news wrap-up. A few minutes later, Eva led me to a nearby set with two comfortable chairs facing each other, we sat down, and were on the air live at 6:55. She did her intro and asked her questions, most of which I was prepared for.

In three minutes, we were done. She thanked me again for coming and went on to her next gig. I took off the microphone and gave it back to the cameraman. We exited through the empty lobby and drove away.

The whole thing was such a whirlwind experience. As I was driving home, I tried to replay it in my mind, but found I couldn’t remember what I’d said. The kids had watched from backstage, so I asked them how they thought it went, i.e. did I look okay, did I sound intelligent, etc. They assured me everything looked and sounded fine to them. They were happy it went well and thought it was cool to be in a TV studio.

I couldn’t wait to get home and watch the broadcast for myself. I was glad to see I didn’t look as nervous as I felt, and I was happy not to have stumbled over my words, though I did say “um” a few times. Next time won’t be nearly as hard.

But just the same — whew, I’m glad it’s over with!

Celebrate the Small Things — Weekend Edition!

Celebrate the Small Things is a weekly celebration created by VikLit and now hosted by Lexa Cain to celebrate the happenings of the week, however small or large. You can learn all about it and sign up for it here. CelebrateSmallThings_Badge

This has been one of those good news/bad news weeks.

The Good:

  1. Celebrating my son’s birthday with family and good friends.
  2. Family outings to the beach and Shelburne Museum.
  3. The Vermont Book Shop, an Indie bookstore in Middlebury, VT, said they would order and stock my book. Yay!
  4. My local librarian finally entered my book into the library database, so it’s now available for everyone to read. I don’t know how she did it, as I haven’t seen her to ask her about it yet, but it’s in the system and on the shelf!

The Bad:

  1. My vehicle needs a bunch of expensive repairs before it will pass inspection. Hopefully, at least some of it will be under extended warranty.
  2. My clothes dryer quit working. I felt like a college kid as I took my wet laundry to my parents’ house.
  3. The mixing valve on my furnace/hot water heater is leaking and will require a plumber to fix.

Ah, well. It could be a lot worse. None of it is health-related, and we still have a roof over our heads.

What other celebrations are going on out there?
