Blog Tour! With Misha Today!

I’m celebrating the release of my new fantasy adventure novel, Trouble By Any Other Name, the sequel to Lady, Thy Name Is Trouble! Today I’m visiting with Misha, where I share the best ways to get your self-published books into libraries.

As Amy Collins says in her recent article, 9 Steps to Getting Your Self-Published Books Into Libraries (http://www.thebookdesigner.com/2016/03/amy-collins/):

“I want my book in libraries because I know that 68% of Americans have a library card and over half of those cardholders say that they have been in their local library in the last month. That is a huge number of potential readers that might need or want my book.”

Hope to see you there!

Trouble By Any Other Name

Tara Triannon is no stranger to trouble. She’s yet to find an enemy her skill with a sword couldn’t dispatch. But how can she fight one that attacks through her dreams?

With her nightmares worsening, Tara seeks answers but finds only more questions. Then her sister, Laraina, reveals a stunning secret that forces Tara to go to the one place Tara’s sworn never to return to. Her troubles multiply when Jovan Trevillion, the secretive soldier of fortune who stole her heart, is mentally tortured by an ancient Being intent on bending him to its will. And worst of all, the Butcher — the terrifying wolf-like assassin she thought she’d killed — survived their duel and is hunting her again.

Hounded by enemies, Tara sets out on a harrowing quest to discover the true nature of who she is, to come to grips with the new volatility of her magic, and to defeat the evil locked in a centuries-old trap that will stop at nothing to control her magic and escape through her nightmares.

IWSG — My 2 Year Blogiversary!

Today’s the day for the Insecure Writer’s Support Group (IWSG) where, on the first Wednesday of every month, writers get together to share their insecurities and offer encouragement. The IWSG was created by Alex J. Cavanaugh, and you can learn all about it and sign up for it here. Insecure Writers Support Group Badge

On this date two years ago, I posted my first blog post. I was embarking on a new journey, the pursuit of my dream of becoming a published author, and I wanted to document that journey in hopes that it might help someone else who had the same dream.

I went back and read that first post and couldn’t help but smile at how far I’ve come. Not only did I achieve my dream, I’m on the verge of accomplishing it a second time. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Book II: Trouble By Any Other Name will be published this spring.

To celebrate the revelation that dreams can indeed come true, I’m reblogging that first post. Never stop believing in your dreams.

March 2nd, 2014 — It’s Time

Writing has always been a part of my life. It began with creating stories in my head for fun when I was young. Or rather, creating characters who wrote their own stories. I never told them what to do. My characters took care of that themselves. They lived their adventures, fought, loved, and sometimes died, in my mind. It was like watching a movie in my head, seeing and hearing the characters as if I stood beside them, holding my breath, along for the ride.

As I grew older, my mother suggested I write my stories down. Such euphoria ensued, sparking a dream of one day being a published author. To hold in my hand a book of my own making would be the greatest nirvana. But life being what it is, with the necessities of having a steady income to pay the bills, and later the beloved obligations of family, the dream stayed just that — a dream. Writing remained a hobby, though in my head my characters’ stories still clamored for release.

Until now. Now, circumstances are such that my dream might actually be within reach. I am going to self-publish my novel. There… I said it. I’m going to self-publish my novel and set my characters free. Wow. Just writing the words and putting them out there is enough to make me laugh and cry at the same time.

I know this will be a huge learning experience, and there will be bumps along the road, but I will persevere until I hold my book in my hand. It may not be the best book ever written, but that’s okay. It will still be nirvana to me.

This is my journey. I invite anyone who wishes to share it with me.

If anyone would like to help me out by doing a release day post or hosting me during the blog tour, that would be wonderful! Please let me know in the comments. Thanks so much!!

Anna Simpson’s White Light Blog Tour!

Today, I’d like to welcome Anna Simpson, aka Emaginette, who just released her cozy mystery, WhiteLight_AnnaSimpson_BlogTourGraphicWhite Light. Having read the book myself, I can say it’s an enjoyable story with an interesting twist in the way of protagonists. Check out the excerpt below.

Anna is here to share one of her top ten lists.

Take it away, Anna!

Thanks, Lori. Hello, everyone.

Top Ten Reasons to Admire Old Crones and Older Fogeys

If you haven’t read my excerpt, all you need to know is I put together a great crime fighting team, a younger woman, an older woman and a ghost. This is not an accident. Everyone, even ghosts, can teach us a few things.

But today I’m here to share why I admire older folks:

  1. The snow story. You know the one. I think some of my age group are beginning to share it too. It starts off, no one had it has hard as they did when dirt was young. Then they explain how as a youngster, they walked in three feet of snow barefoot to get to school. Yep, sure they did.
  2. The great recipes. My grandmother had the best recipes trapped inside her head. She used a teacup, her palm or a pinch between her fingers to measure. Learning her recipes was hard and the best time I ever had.
  3. Fashion sense. Just look at them. All dolled up for grocery shopping with perfect blue sausage curls, bow ties, and fedoras. Just too cute.
  4. Tea parties. Again it’s the food… and the gossip. They bring history alive. It’s almost as if they were there.
  5. Their take on the world today. It’s all so complicated. My grandmother came to British Columbia with her children on a wagon from Saskatchewan. Slow and steady suited her best.
  6. Wisdom, she had some of that old fashioned common sense that seems so rare today. She somehow cut through all the top layer and got to what was important.
  7. Crafts. They could make almost anything out of almost anything. For example, rag rugs. Who thought that up? Well, it’s brilliant. I love them to bits.
  8. Napping anywhere. They just close their eyes for a moment and sleep sitting up. Amazing stuff. I plan to master this one day myself.
  9. Minds like steel traps. Can’t remember what they had for breakfast, but still remember what you wore for your first day of school. Nope, not embarrassing at all.
  10. Best accessories. Things like motorized chairs on steroids, with little wheels that pretty much go anywhere, canes that should be registered as lethal weapons, and magnifying glasses that leave the impression they are a new breed of detective.

Not only do I find older folks charming and fun, I find them a source of great entertainment. Hug an old crone or an older fogey sometime and you’ll see what I mean.

Emma never dreamed of being a super-sleuth. In her mind, she’s more Scooby Doo than Nancy Drew and when her nosy neighbor, Mrs. Perkins, drags her to an anniversary party to solve a mystery, she rolls her eyes, buys a box of chocolates and hops in the car.

What’s a party without an attack on its host—or more accurately on the host’s grandson, sparking an allergic reaction and moving the party to the hospital waiting room. Suddenly, everyone is a suspect. Emma and Mrs. Perkins, along with Great Aunt Alice (a spirit with boundary issues who keeps stepping into Emma’s body like a new dress and playing matchmaker), dive into an investigation that almost gets Emma killed along with the man they are trying to protect. With so many reasons to kill him and so much to be gained if he died, Emma and Mrs. Perkins must unravel the tenuous ties that point to every member of his family as potential killers.

Even if it means going back to the psych ward, Emma will protect her friend and this innocent man. What good is freedom if it’s haunted with guilt?

Excerpt:

To stay free, I perform a ritual every morning. It begins with stepping outside, where dawn streams through the leafy branches of my maple tree, landing, shifting, and dancing on the flowerbeds at my bare feet. A steaming cup of coffee warms my hands. The fragrant air fills my lungs. I sip, leaving the liquid on my tongue to capture a moment of rich goodness.

My name is Emma, and I need to stay grounded and calm. It’s important for my health, so I walk along the fence and let the cool blades of grass tickle my toes and dewdrops cling to my skin. For fun, I kick a ball of dandelion fluff. Little parachutes take flight catching the same breeze moving the leaves above my head. The seeds float up, and up, over the fence to land on Mrs. Perkins’ perfectly tended lawn. Not a dandelion or mat of moss to be seen.

In a half acre of green sits one flowerbed, brimming with Lily of the Valley. I remember the first time I saw them over fifteen years ago. The delicate white bells could only be fairy hats. Today, the round base of cemented river stone is still full of waxy green spear tips. I don’t see fairy hats anymore. No, now I enjoy the effects of nature—its simple perfection.

Mrs. Perkins does it best. In fact, everything around Mrs. Perkins is perfectly cared for—her home, her yard, her car—all perfect.

But not today. A dark line sits between the jamb and the edge of the door.
A few inches of shadow drives my calm away and prickles the long blonde hairs at the nape of my neck. Butterflies in my stomach tell, no scratch that, demand I find my phone and go next door.

Don’t get the wrong idea. I’m not a snoop.

Mrs. Perkins, a wiry old bird, did everything herself. I’m not sure if it is because she’s the independent sort or if she has no one else to help her. Either way, when she suggested we watch out for one another, I agreed.

I’m also alone. It doesn’t bother me unless I catch the flu or something. Then I wonder if I will die and no one will notice. It’s a thought, or fear, I can’t shake. Mrs. Perkins’ house has my full attention, and within it sits the same worry. I’ll check on her because she would do the same for me.

I crash into my kitchen, slopping my coffee onto the counter as I slam the mug down. My phone could be anywhere. My gaze travels from the pine tabletop to the gray marble counter. It’s not here. I push through the swinging door to the living area, run my fingertips between the couch and chair cushions, scan the smoked-glass coffee table through my veil of long blonde hair, and sneak a peek under my overturned book on the throw rug. Desperate, I check around the bowl by the door where I toss my keys as I pass the spiral staircase to the loft. Still nothing.

Down the short hallway, I rush to my bedroom. I tug the midnight blue duvet off the bed and shake it. My pulse speeds up as something thuds on to the carpet. I pick up my smartphone and check the battery. Half power.

Excellent. I dash through my front door, across the lawn and unlatch Mrs. Perkins’ white picket gate. Her shiny yellow front door looks as solid as stone. I follow her path to the back wondering if danger lurks.

I gasp as I near the door. It’s like living a moment in a crime drama. I mimic what I have watched on television and bring up my phone to take a picture. Inching forward, heart pounding, I wonder if poor Mrs. Perkins is sprawled out on the bathroom floor, from a stroke, heart attack, or a butcher knife.

Don’t worry, Mrs. Perkins. I’m coming.

I pull my cotton sleeve over my hand and push the door wider. Her kitchen looks untouched as if it’s sterilized or newly installed. Tiles cool my bare feet with each step. Fear scratches at my nerves, “Mrs. Perkins? It’s Emma from next door. Are you okay?”

Silence.

I raise the phone to call for help.

A small sound carries from deeper in the house. I should stop, leave, and make the call.

Following the sound might be dangerous or, worse, plain stupid. And I’m scared. So scared, my breathing is all I hear over the pounding of my heart.
I’d look stupid if I’m wrong. Ravenglass Lake is so small-townsville, and Benny the bully is like no cop I’ve ever met. He would be no help. Worst of all, they’d call me crazy for sure. I slip the phone back into my denim pocket, quietly open her knife drawer, and pull out a meat cleaver. Armed, I creep forward.

Thank goodness Mrs. Perkins likes an open airy room. Evil housebreakers have nowhere to hide in the dining room.

A small thump like a cat landing on carpet makes me jump. But Mrs. Perkins doesn’t have a cat…or carpet—only allergies.

I tighten my grip on the cleaver as I stick my head into the living room. All is quiet and undisturbed. I enter the corridor to the front door. To my right are stairs to the upper floor. Farther ahead is a hall closet and nook where she keeps a desk and a small bookcase. Nothing seems touched.

I glance up at the glittery ceiling, swallow, and pull my phone from my pocket. The sensible thing is to dial 911. I sidestep for the front door, but in my mind’s eye Mrs. Perkins, wiry but frail, shakes her head. Her arm outstretched urging me not to leave.

Thump, I freeze. The noise is right beside me coming from the hall closet.
Without thinking, I open the door and find Mrs. Perkins tied up with duct tape across her lips. Her green eyes, round and unblinking, grow wide, and her usual perfect curls are mussed. I drop the cleaver. It clatters on the floor, and I pull the tape free.

Jessica Therrien’s REDEMPTION Blog Tour!

Today, I’d like to welcome Jessica Therrien, whose new book, REDEMPTION (Children of the Gods #3), was just released. And here she is —

ffebf-redemption2bfirst2bedition2bcover

Hello! I’m Jessica Therrien, author of the Children of the Gods series. If you’re here as part of the tour for REDEMPTION (Children of the Gods #3), thanks for stopping by! I wanted to talk about my inspiration behind the series.

My inspiration for writing a novel in general was my search for the next “it” book. I fell in love with the YA genre and worked my way through all the MUST READs. After a while, I was having trouble finding one that sucked me in the way my favorites did. I looked for months, reading a bunch of books that left me disappointed. Eventually I decided I’d write it myself. After all, I knew what I was looking for. I knew what I wanted to read.

I started dabbling in writing and needed a premise for a story. I wanted my characters to be supernatural, but I wanted the story to have a sense of realism. As if it could all be happening right under our noses.

I remembered learning in school that certain parts of Greek mythology are based in fact. I thought…what if more than just the city of Troy was real? What if the Greek gods were never really gods, but a supernatural race of people who were misunderstood and mistaken for gods?

My imagination took it from there…

Here are some interesting tid-bits of Greek mythology that got me thinking (per Wikipedia):

Troy was a city, both factual and legendary, in northwest Anatolia in what is now Turkey, south of the southwest end of the Dardanelles / Hellespont and northwest of Mount Ida. It is best known for being the setting of the Trojan War described in the Greek Epic Cycle and especially in the Iliad, one of the two epic poems attributed to Homer.

The island of Gozo has long been associated with Ogygia, the island home of the nymph Calypso in Homer‘s Odyssey. Calypso, possessed of great supernatural powers, holds Odysseus captive for a number of years because of her love for him before releasing him to continue his journey home.[2]

Thanks for having me on your blog, Lori! 🙂

I’m happy to have you here, Jessica!

ffebf-redemption2bfirst2bedition2bcover Lead Council member, Christoph, is dead by Elyse’s hand, and Descendants have begun to emerge, exposing their secret to the world. Some see this as the prophecy come to fruition, but the prophecy caries a heavy consequence. It was never meant to be as peaceful as most had hoped.

Humans and Descendants struggle to live together in a world that isn’t ready for such a change. America is divided. Those who glorify the supernatural race believe Descendants truly are the gods they claim relation to. Others see them as a threat.

When Elyse gives birth to the next generation oracle, she sees one final vision—war. The destruction of the country’s major cities, and the end of America as we know it.

After her daughter is born, Elyse finds herself without the ability she needs to predict the future. Desperate to save the world from such conflict, she puts her faith in the hope that Descendants are the key to survival. After all, they have the power to supply a broken society with the means to survive.

Only from the ashes can a new world be born.

L.G. Keltner’s A Silent Soliloquy Blog Tour!

L.G. Keltner is stopping by today on her blog tour to celebrate her new book, A Silent Soliloquy. Take it away, L.G.!

I’d like to thank Lori for letting me take over her blog today! While I’m here, I’d like to talk a little about my publishing journey.

It feels surreal that I’m finally doing this. The idea of self-publishing my work has been on my mind since I started blogging, but I kept chickening out. Sending A Silent Soliloquy out into the world feels a bit like walking outside naked during broad daylight, only a bit more legal.

I wrote A Silent Soliloquy and revised it multiple times. I was afraid to let anyone see it. Those who’d read my work said it was good, but the fact that I’d never gone through with publishing anything before intimidated me. It was one thing to share stories on my blog. The idea of preparing my manuscript for publication, sending it out beyond the friendly backyard that is my blog, and marketing it seemed downright daunting.

Then my husband read my book. He finished it in a matter of hours, then he proceeded to praise it. I know him. If he hadn’t really liked it, he would have told me it was good and left it at that. Instead he kept talking about it. He knew I’d been considering publishing it and that I would need cover art to make that happen, so he asked someone he knew to draw something up. I loved it, and before I knew it, the ball was rolling. I guess I just needed that extra nudge, and family support means everything.

Once I had that nudge, I studied what my fellow bloggers had done. I considered their advice. That’s crucial. Don’t be afraid to seek advice from those who’ve traveled this road before.

I got my book ready for Amazon. Having decided that I wanted as wide a distribution as possible, I decided not to enroll in KDP Select. The exclusivity requirement didn’t work for what I wanted to do. Who knows if that was a good decision or not? I guess I’ll see.

After that, I set up a print edition through CreateSpace, and I went on the fun journey of formatting it for Smashwords. Getting into the Premium Catalog is no easy task, but it’s a necessary one to reach the maximum possible audience. It was worth the effort I put into it.

Now here I am on the marketing leg of this journey. I’m engaging on this blog tour because it seems to work for other self-published writers, and I’m having fun with it so far.
