IWSG — My 2 Year Blogiversary!

Today’s the day for the Insecure Writer’s Support Group (IWSG) where, on the first Wednesday of every month, writers get together to share their insecurities and offer encouragement. The IWSG was created by Alex J. Cavanaugh, and you can learn all about it and sign up for it here. Insecure Writers Support Group Badge

On this date two years ago, I posted my first blog post. I was embarking on a new journey, the pursuit of my dream of becoming a published author, and I wanted to document that journey in hopes that it might help someone else who had the same dream.

I went back and read that first post and couldn’t help but smile at how far I’ve come. Not only did I achieve my dream, I’m on the verge of accomplishing it a second time. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Book II: Trouble By Any Other Name will be published this spring.

To celebrate the revelation that dreams can indeed come true, I’m reblogging that first post. Never stop believing in your dreams.

March 2nd, 2014 — It’s Time

Writing has always been a part of my life. It began with creating stories in my head for fun when I was young. Or rather, creating characters who wrote their own stories. I never told them what to do. My characters took care of that themselves. They lived their adventures, fought, loved, and sometimes died, in my mind. It was like watching a movie in my head, seeing and hearing the characters as if I stood beside them, holding my breath, along for the ride.

As I grew older, my mother suggested I write my stories down. Such euphoria ensued, sparking a dream of one day being a published author. To hold in my hand a book of my own making would be the greatest nirvana. But life being what it is, with the necessities of having a steady income to pay the bills, and later the beloved obligations of family, the dream stayed just that — a dream. Writing remained a hobby, though in my head my characters’ stories still clamored for release.

Until now. Now, circumstances are such that my dream might actually be within reach. I am going to self-publish my novel. There… I said it. I’m going to self-publish my novel and set my characters free. Wow. Just writing the words and putting them out there is enough to make me laugh and cry at the same time.

I know this will be a huge learning experience, and there will be bumps along the road, but I will persevere until I hold my book in my hand. It may not be the best book ever written, but that’s okay. It will still be nirvana to me.

This is my journey. I invite anyone who wishes to share it with me.

Originally, I was planning to release my second book in April, but with A to Z coming up, I chickened out and decided on the first week of May. I hope to do a blog tour soon afterward.

If anyone would like to help me out by doing a release day post or hosting me during the blog tour, that would be wonderful! Please let me know in the comments. Thanks so much!!

I hope everyone gets a chance to check out all the authors participating in the 2016 2K Indie Book Tour. Their books sound like amazing reads. Celebrations for this week:

  1. A snow day! School was canceled last Tuesday because of an ice/sleet/snow storm. My kids were ecstatic. And next week is school vacation!
  2. I saw a flock of robins on a neighbor’s lawn this morning! Either the birds are really confused, or spring is on its way.
  3. More editing progress! The end is in sight.
  4. Carrie Butler of Forward Authority Designs did a fantastic job on the cover for Book II: Trouble By Any Other Name. I’m not quite ready to reveal it yet. Soon.

What other celebrations are going on out there?

IWSG — To Raise Or Not To Raise…

Today’s the day for the Insecure Writer’s Support Group (IWSG) where, on the first Wednesday of every month, writers get together to share their insecurities and offer encouragement. The IWSG was created by Alex J. Cavanaugh, and you can learn all about it and sign up for it here. IWSG_Badge

The print version of my book, Lady, Thy Name Is Trouble, is printed on demand by the distributors Lightning Source/IngramSpark (LSI), so I don’t have to keep cases of books as backstock in my basement. Recently, I received notice from LSI that their printing costs would be increasing to cover their rising costs. I was given a window of time in which I could raise the retail price of my book and submit a new cover file reflecting this increased price without having to pay for the file update. The deadline is the end of February.

So I have to decide — do I raise the price of my print book, or leave it as is?

I had originally set the price at $16.99, which was about as low as I could go without selling at a loss. I figured if I priced my first book too high, no one would buy it. But with the 55% wholesale discount the big retailers get, the margin of profit is miniscule.

If I leave the price as is, I’ll still be in the black, but just barely. I tell myself, it’s okay, I’m not in it for the money. And yet I have to say it would be nice to make at least a little profit. But I’m concerned that if I raise the price a dollar or two, I’ll lose sales, and that would defeat the purpose of getting my book out there into readers’ hands. What to do?

Has anyone else ever run into this problem? What did you decide?

Celebrate the Small Things! And the Release of Kate Sparkes’ Sworn

This week I’m celebrating continued progress with Book II: Trouble By Any Other Name. I’m getting closer to finishing up the edits. I’ve been working with Sue Archer, copy editor extraordinaire, and I couldn’t be happier with her efforts. I’ve given my cover design to the inimitable Carrie Butler of Forward Authority Design Services to turn into a professional-looking cover. Getting closer!

I’m also celebrating the release of Kate Sparkes’ new book — Sworn. Sworn is the third book in the Bound trilogy. I’ve added it to my TBR list. Looking forward to reading it!

Not every fairy tale ends with “happily ever after.”

The plan was simple: Find Ulric, the lost king of Tyrea, then return him to Luid to reclaim his throne from the tyrant who stole it. But though Aren, Rowan, and Nox accomplished the first part of their task, the rest is proving to be more complicated than any of them imagined.

Severn won’t give up his throne without a fight. Worse, it seems Ulric did not fare as well during his years in captivity as he’s led everyone to believe—and Rowan may not have escaped unscathed, either.

If Nox doesn’t find a cure for the king’s mysterious ailment, Aren will be forced to challenge Severn for the crown. It’s a battle Aren has little hope of winning. And if he does, it will cost him the love and the freedom he’s fought so hard to gain.

I took a little longer break than I had planned, but that’s okay. It was much needed, and I accomplished quite a bit. So without further ado, here are my celebrations for the week:

  1. I finished and posted the latest version of the book trailer for my forthcoming second book, Trouble By Any Other Name! You can see it HERE.
  2. Only 8 more chapters to go (out of 40) for my final edits!
  3. My kids are finishing up their midterm exams this morning, and then it’s off for the weekend!
  4. That big snowstorm that’s supposed to hit the East Coast on Saturday will likely miss us up here in northern New England. Since I’m a snow shoveler and not a skier or a snowboarder, that makes me happy.

Belated Happy New Year to everyone! What other celebrations are going on out there?

The New Trailer! For Book II: Trouble By Any Other Name

I fully intended to post something over the last couple of weeks since the start of the new year, but I’ve been making so much progress with my edits and book trailer during my social media break that I just had to keep going with them.

I uploaded the latest version of the trailer for my forthcoming second book, Trouble By Any Other Name, to YouTube. I’d love feedback from anyone who has time to check it out. Here it is, and thank you! Happy New Year!

We’re down to one week until Christmas! Since next Friday is Christmas day, I won’t be posting then. I have two more posts lined up, and then I’ll be taking a break until January. It’ll be 2016, and who knows what possibilities the new year will hold? But for now, I’d like to celebrate:

  1. Christmas vacation coming up! My kids go to school on Monday and Tuesday and then are off for the rest of the year.
  2. Getting together with family and friends over the holidays. It’s always so much fun!
  3. Continued progress with final edits. I’m getting there!

Happy Holidays to everyone! What other celebrations are going on out there?

Blurb:

Alex O’Hara wants to take her investigation agency in a new direction—background checks for potential spouses. She hopes this new case will do the trick when a high-powered executive asks for info on her new boyfriend. Is the man she met on a cruise her Mr. Right or is he too good to be true? On the same day, Alex gets another case—finding a deadbeat dad. And both women want to double her rates so she’ll give them highest priority. She can’t believe her luck. Her finances are on the upswing. If only Nick Palzetti was around to share her good news. He disappeared on Christmas Eve, and she hasn’t heard from him in almost three months. But glitchy phones and no internet bring everything to a screeching halt.

Excerpt:

Dottie pursed her lips and gave her husband the evil eye. “We will talk later.” Then she turned that eye on me. “What are you doing here? I thought you were too busy to go anywhere today.”

My face burned. On our run yesterday, I told her I had to write a report. And again this morning when she begged me to go antiquing with her.

“I was busy. I mean I am. I needed a break. My eyes were coming out of my head from typing, my internet is on the fritz, and I need to ask you about someone.”

“Doesn’t RJ—”

As I followed her into the kitchen, I stepped on something then hopped around. That’s what I got for leaving my shoes at the front door.

“James Andrew Matthews the Third, what did I tell you about leaving Legos on the floor? Auntie Alex could break her neck stepping on them.”

Trey, who with his father had been trying to slink away, scurried back. “Sorry, Mom. And she’s not Auntie Lex. She’s Princess Lex.”

“Princess? Ri-ight.” She rolled her eyes. “Jim, Emmy’s awake. Go get her.”

The woman had supersonic hearing.

“Yes, ma’am.”

Since we were all still in the hall, he edged past her, heading for the stairs with the dog following.

“And wake up Billy, though I don’t know how he could sleep through all this noise. And don’t forget to check Emmy’s diaper and make sure Billy goes potty before he comes down here.”

Jim saluted. “Will do.”

“Now.” Dottie whirled on me. “Who do you want to talk about?” Her gaze cut to Trey standing silently next to her taking in everything. “Wait for me in the living room, Alex. Trey, out to the family room with those Legos.”

I always felt like I was in the middle of a tornado at Dottie’s house. Talk about multi-tasking. Her mind—and mouth—went ninety miles an hour as she directed her household. A military chief had nothing on her.

Seeing her in action confirmed I could never be a good mother. I didn’t have the patience.

While waiting for her to return from the kitchen, I relaxed in the dark green wingback chair. With the new year, Dottie had declared the living room was her sanctuary. The kids and the dog weren’t allowed in. Sometimes, I wondered if Jim was.

Once we were settled with cups of hot tea—chai, my favorite—she asked again who I wanted to discuss.

“Stephanie Voorhees came to see me.”

“That girl. Her mother and mine are friends, so she thinks we should be, too. But all she does is talk about her ex. I got so tired of her complaining about him not sending child support I told her to talk to you to get her off my back.”

I took a sip of my now cooled tea. “Gee, thanks. A heads-up would have helped.”

“Sorry. I meant to.” She flicked her forehead. “Mommy brain.”

That was her excuse for forgetting everything from milk at the grocery store to mani-pedi appointments she set up for us.

“I tried to put her off.” I set my cup on a coaster on the lamp table. “She shouldn’t spend her money on an investigator when her kids need boots and winter clothes.”

Dottie choked on her tea. “Stephanie Voorhees has plenty of money. Why do you think they lived in Bloomfield Hills? Her ex didn’t make that kind of money. Daddy bought the house. She’s living with her parents here in Far Haven. And they have more money than God.”

That made me feel a little better.

“Did you say something’s wrong with your internet? What did RJ say?”

RJ, my tech guru, took care of all my electronics—computer, phones, internet.

“He isn’t answering his phone.”

Wow, this month is flying right by. I can’t believe it’s only two weeks until Christmas. My kids have been sick this week, so I’ve been doing more of my Christmas shopping online. I’m happy to say I’ve got a lot of it done now. Celebrations this time around:

  1. My kids are feeling better after a nasty cold/flu/stomach bug thing.
  2. My Christmas shopping is almost done.
  3. Continued mild weather. It’s weird for this time of the year, but I like it.
  4. All four books that I brought to the local Kinney Drug store have sold, so I brought in four more. Yay!

Celebrate the Small Things! — Weekend Edition

Celebrate the Small Things is a weekly celebration created by VikLit and now hosted by Lexa Cain to celebrate the happenings of the week, however small or large. You can learn all about it and sign up for it here. CelebrateSmallThings_Badge

I took last Friday off from blogging for the Thanksgiving holiday. It was nice to have great weather for it, even though we didn’t have that far to travel. I know there were many other people who did have many miles to go. I enjoy Thanksgiving because it reminds me of how much I have to be thankful for. With all the craziness in life, it’s important to stop and be thankful and not take for granted all the blessings we have.

On that note, I’d like to celebrate:

  1. Family and friends! Where would we be without them?
  2. Simple things like getting a haircut and treating yourself to an ice cream sundae.
  3. Getting into the Christmas spirit! I was able to get some shopping done this week, so I’m not so far behind.
  4. Starting work on a book trailer for Book 2, Trouble By Any Other Name! I really enjoy doing those.

What other celebrations are going on out there?
